Roan Mountain is one of the most versatile and stunning elopement locations in Western North Carolina. Known for it’s towering evergreen trees, fern-covered trails, and 360 views at the summit, this mountain is truly one of a kind. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also one of the easiest places to elope since a permit isn’t required with less than 75 guests.
You may have also seen Roan Mountain referred to as Round Bald, which is the name of the trail that I love most for elopements! The trail begins with a walk through tall evergreen trees and ends with 360 views at the bald. My couples have described it as a “screaming from the mountaintops” type of view! The hike is a short 2 miles roundtrip, and there are a handful of spots at the summit that have room for some guests to gather for your ceremony, making it the perfect location for couples eloping with family.
Sarah & Anthony started their elopement by hiking up on their own, taking time to soak in the magic of the winding trail and mesmerizing trees. Their guests followed shortly after, and we met at the summit for a small ceremony with their families. They chose a beautiful spot for their ceremony, said their vows, and celebrated with their loved ones. Following their ceremony, we spent more time exploring the bald, taking in the views, and taking portraits.
Roan Mountain is about a 1.5 hour drive from Asheville, or 45 minutes from Blowing Rock. I always suggest Blowing Rock as a great “home-base” for your elopement at Roan Mountain. The scenic drive from Blowing Rock takes you through Pisgah National Forest and into Cherokee National Forest to Roan Mountain. Blowing Rock has a variety of mountain homes to stay in, restaurants for a small elopement dinner, and a charming downtown to explore. Additionally, Asheville is another great place to stay for those who like bigger cities that still maintain the mountain vibe. Asheville has even more rentals to choose from, cocktail bars, breweries, fine-dining, and tourist attractions like the Biltmore Estate to visit on your trip.
For accurate directions to Roan Mountain, you’ll need to set your GPS to Carver’s Gap Trailhead. There are a handful of parking spots and a restroom at the trailhead.
The best seasons to elope at Roan Mountain are summer and fall. Summer is my personal favorite for it’s bright blues and greens, epic sunsets, and warm weather. If you’re dreaming of warm fall foliage colors, October is always the busiest month in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so I would suggest choosing a date in late September or early November. To avoid crowds, you could elope at sunrise for the most private & peaceful experience!
Roan Mountain is part of a National Forest, and a permit is not required for weddings with less than 75 guests. Please be sure to follow leave no trace principles, stay on the trail, and be mindful of your group size for minimal impact on the land. I would suggest keeping your guest count under 20 on public lands.
